Sustainability
Local
Impact
We are not just investing in resorts, sustainability and conservation. We are also investing in the local communities and economy. We have already added 25+ good jobs to the local economy and given significant contracts to local artisans and other workers. We have also sponsored Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve’s efforts to conserve a critical piece of rainforest in the major Belizean migration cooridor.
We are working with local leaders to improve the future of tourism and the economy in Belize, develop new local production methods, and invest in the next generation of leaders.
Power
From the Sun
Just like our rainforest home captures the sun’s energy and stores it in the jungle, we are doing the same thing to power our resort.
We minimize the usage of power in order to maximize the percentage of our power that comes from the sun. We have a new solar array that captures solar energy and powers the entire resort day and night on sunny days, which are the vast majority of the days in Belize!
On cloudy days, we supplement with traditional power generation to keep things going! You can help us by turning off lights and fans when they are not in use.
Water
From the Stream
Our stream runs year round right next to the center of the resort. It originates in the Tapir Mountain Reserve at an artesian spring where the Mayan people create a reservoir for water collection.
As the stream flows onto our property, we pump it up the hill into holding tanks that feed our gravity-powered water system for all the units and facilities on the property.
When we are done using the water, it goes into multi-stage septic systems, and filters back into the ground.
HOT WATER
We heat our water by burning Cohune nuts gathered from, the jungle floor. This allows consistent hot water while not requiring additional gas or electrical resources for heating.
DRINKING WATER
Our drinking water is stream water from the same artesian spring. The water is already very clean, but we filter it to ensure purity for our guests.
Food
From the Garden
We have 50 aeroponic towers that can grow up to 2,200 plants simultaneously. We also have several grow boxes and our Secret Garden that grow crops not suited for growth on the towers.
Any produce we don’t grow on-site is purchased from local growers, so you know your food is local, sustainable, and fresh! This gives the highest nutrient density with the lowest impact on the environment.
